KETIKA MENGAJI TERASA KURANG MENARIK
Tapi setelah tamat (kitab). teman-teman satu kelas belau (kiyai) berebut meminjam catatan beliau (sang kiyai).

WHEN STUDYING FEELS UNINTERESTING
While studying at the Islamic boarding school, we sometimes meet teachers or Kyais whose way of reading or explaining feels less engaging. Everyone indeed has their own style and that is perfectly fine.
Yet there is an important principle to hold fast to: stay with the lesson until it is fully completed / khatam. For here lies the secret: whoever is able to do this to remain steadfast until the end will gain true, beneficial knowledge.
📖 First Story Kencong
During his period of spiritual training in Kencong, there was a lesson on Musthalahat Hadith. Almost the entire class fell asleep only he (the Kyai) remained attentive and listening. The teacher’s style was indeed felt less easy to follow; his explanations were simply too long.
But once the book was finished, his classmates all rushed to borrow his notes. Because his were the only notes that were complete and full of deep meaning. Masha Allah.
📖 Second Story Lirboyo
When he studied at Lirboyo, the teaching method made many students find it difficult. Every isim isyaroh (demonstrative pronoun) was explained only as “Madzkur” without clearly stating exactly what or whom it referred to.
Yet precisely because of this, the students chose to seek the answers themselves to study and review on their own after the lesson ended. Most of those attending were themselves Kyais, and they truly understood the material only when they reviewed it privately later, not during the lesson itself.
✅ Key Lessons
- This is not meant to criticize the teacher. It may well be that the method chosen is actually the best one for example, to make students strive earnestly to find the meaning themselves.
- For students: there is no reason to stop halfway and move to another place to study, just because you find your teacher’s style uninteresting or not pleasant to listen to. Stay committed no matter what
