MENGAPA SANTRI BARU TIDAK BOLEH DIJENGUK SELAMA 40 HARI?
Banyak yang bertanya, mengapa santri baru di pesantren umumnya tidak boleh dijenguk selama 40 hari pertama? Ternyata tradisi ini memiliki landasan yang kuat dari dalil dan riwayat.
Sejarahnya tertuang dalam Al-Qur'an Surat Al-A'raf ayat 142. Setelah Nabi Musa a.s. dan kaumnya selamat dari kejaran Firaun, Beliau melakukan latihan batin: menjauhi hiruk-pikuk dunia dan berfokus bermunajat kepada Allah. Nabi Musa mengasingkan diri di Bukit Sinai selama 40 hari, hingga akhirnya menerima amanah Kitab Taurat, lalu kembali membimbing Bani Israil.
Dalam riwayat lain, Rasulullah SAW berwasiat kepada Sayyidina Ali: "Wahai Ali, jika seorang mukmin sudah melewati 40 hari tanpa berhubungan dengan ulama tidak bersilaturahim, tidak mendengarkan nasihat, tidak hadir di majelis ilmu maka hatinya akan mengeras, dan ia berani melakukan dosa besar. Sebab sesungguhnya ilmu adalah kehidupan bagi hati."
Berdasarkan hal tersebut, santri baru diwajibkan menjalani masa penyesuaian diri. Selama 40 hari ini, mereka diminta melupakan kebiasaan di rumah, tidak memikirkan urusan keluarga, hingga hati dan jiwanya benar-benar terbiasa dengan suasana, aturan, dan kehidupan pesantren.

WHY ARE NEW STUDENTS NOT ALLOWED VISITORS FOR 40 DAYS?
Many ask why new students at traditional Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) are generally not allowed to receive visitors during their first 40 days. This tradition is rooted firmly in religious texts and prophetic teachings.
Its basis is found in the Quran, Surah Al-A'raf verse 142. After Prophet Musa (Moses) and his people were saved from Pharaoh’s pursuit, he undertook spiritual training: stepping away from the noise and distractions of the world to focus entirely on calling upon Allah. Prophet Musa secluded himself on Mount Sinai for 40 days, where he was eventually entrusted with the Torah, before returning to guide the Children of Israel.
In another narration, the Prophet Muhammad SAW advised Sayyidina Ali: "O Ali, if a believer goes more than 40 days without connecting with scholars without keeping ties with them, listening to their counsel, or attending gatherings of knowledge their heart will harden, and they will grow bold in committing major sins. For truly, knowledge is the very life of the heart."
Drawing from these examples, new students are required to go through a period of adjustment. During these 40 days, they are encouraged to set aside old habits from home and put aside family concerns, so their hearts and spirits may fully adapt to the atmosphere, rules, and way of life at the boarding school.
