Proses Terjadinya Gerhana Bulan

 

- Gerhana bulan terjadi ketika Bumi berada di antara Matahari dan Bulan, sehingga menghalangi sinar Matahari yang biasanya dipantulkan oleh Bulan. Akibatnya, bayangan Bumi jatuh pada permukaan Bulan.

- Fenomena ini dapat diamati pada malam hari dan dibagi menjadi dua jenis:

- Gerhana bulan total: Terjadi saat Bulan dan Matahari berada di sisi berlawanan Bumi. Meskipun dalam bayangan Bumi, sebagian sinar Matahari masih mencapai Bulan setelah melewati atmosfer Bumi yang menyaring cahaya biru, membuat Bulan tampak berwarna merah.

- Gerhana bulan sebagian: Terjadi ketika hanya sebagian Bulan memasuki bayangan Bumi. Bagian Bulan yang terkena bayangan akan terlihat sangat gelap, dan tampilan yang dilihat bergantung pada sejajarnya posisi Matahari, Bumi, dan Bulan

Mitos yang Mengiringi Gerhana Bulan

 

Berbagai masyarakat memiliki keyakinan yang berbeda terkait gerhana bulan, meskipun bukan merupakan fakta ilmiah:

 

- Bulan dimakan Batara Kala (beberapa daerah Jawa): Warga percaya gerhana terjadi karena Bulan dimakan oleh Batara Kala. Mereka akan menabuh lumpang untuk mengusirnya, dan perempuan hamil biasanya mengoleskan abu pada perutnya untuk melindungi bayinya.

- Bulan dimakan Jaguar (suku Inca kuno): Dianggap sebagai pertanda buruk, karena dipercaya setelah menghabiskan Bulan, Jaguar akan turun ke Bumi untuk memakan manusia. Maka suku Inca akan membuat suara gaduh untuk mengusirnya.

- Penampakan Ibu Bulan (orang asli Amerika): Gerhana dianggap sebagai saat Ibu Bulan menampakkan diri, yang membawa penerangan dan akan membersihkan jiwa, energi, serta aspek emosional dan spiritual manusia, terutama bagi perempuan.

- This phenomenon can be observed at night and is divided into two types:

- Total lunar eclipse: Occurs when the Moon and the Sun are on opposite sides of the Earth. Even though the Moon is in the Earth's shadow, some sunlight still reaches it after passing through the Earth's atmosphere, which filters out most blue light, causing the Moon to appear red.

- Partial lunar eclipse: Occurs when only part of the Moon enters the Earth's shadow. The portion of the Moon covered by the shadow will appear very dark, and the view seen depends on the alignment of the Sun, Earth, and Moon

 

Myths Associated with Lunar Eclipses

 

Various communities hold different beliefs regarding lunar eclipses, although these are not scientific facts:

 

- The Moon is eaten by Batara Kala (some areas in Java): People believe that an eclipse occurs because the Moon is being eaten by Batara Kala. They will beat a traditional drum called lumpang to drive it away, and pregnant women usually apply ash to their stomachs to protect their babies.

- The Moon is eaten by a Jaguar (ancient Inca people): Considered a bad omen, as it was believed that after consuming the Moon, the Jaguar would descend to Earth to eat humans. Therefore, the Inca people would make loud noises to scare it away.

- Appearance of the Moon Mother (Native Americans): The eclipse is regarded as a time when the Moon Mother reveals herself, bringing light and purifying people's souls, energy, as well as emotional and spiritual aspects—especially for women.
